Nathaniel Geiger

Nathaniel Geiger is an active low brass musician and music educator based in Dallas-Fort Worth. Nathaniel was born and raised in Champaign, Illinois, where he began playing trombone at the age of ten. He holds degrees from Illinois State University (Bachelors of Music Education, Summa Cum Laude), and Michigan State University (Masters of Music Performance.) He currently serves as a trombone, bass trombone, and euphonium instructor for Allen and McKinney ISD, and previously served as a low brass instructor for Richardson ISD. Nathaniel’s students consistently advance to TMEA All-Region, Area, and All-State ensembles, and receive superior ratings and awards at solo and ensemble contests. They are recognized within their school music programs, and have performed in TMEA state-winning ensembles. His students have also been accepted into various competitions and programs including the Malcolm Helm Honors Recital and Interlochen Fine Arts Camp, and ensembles including the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra and the Greater North Texas Youth Orchestra.
While in Texas, Nathaniel has performed with the Allen Philharmonic, The Dallas Millennial Choir And Orchestra, The Frisco Jazz Band, and Rockwall Summer Musicals. Nathaniel has also performed with The Illinois Symphony, The Lansing Symphony, The Rochester Symphony, The Michigan Philharmonic, and The Midland Symphony. He has also served as principal trombone of The Urbana Pops Orchestra, and has won positions at the Round Top Festival Institute and The Sewanee Summer Music Festival. Nathaniel was the winner of the Low Brass Solo Competition at the North American Brass Band Championships in 2016, and was a finalist for concerto competitions at Illinois State and Michigan State. Nathaniel has recorded the music of David Maslanka, John Mackey, Stephen Bryant, and other prominent wind band composers with both Illinois State and Michigan State, performing on the CD "Monuments’’, winner of the 2015 “American Prize” for College Wind Ensemble Recordings. He has also recorded for film and documentary soundtracks for “Blue Police Box Music”, a multimedia composition studio based in Los Angeles. In 2014, Nathaniel gave the inaugural recital of the Urbana Pops Orchestra’s now annual “Principal Recital Series.”
Nathaniel has also performed extensively with American brass bands. Nathaniel is currently the Principal Trombonist and Logistics Director of The Dallas Brass Band, and has also performed, soloed, and recorded with The Five Lakes Silver Band and The Capital City Brass Band. In 2017, Nathaniel was invited on an international contest tour of England and Scotland with the current reigning North American Champion Fountain City Brass Band, where the group placed 2nd at “Brass In Concert”, a contest featuring top bands from five countries, and 3rd at “The Scottish Open.”
Nathaniel is active as a teacher in the marching arts. He is an alumnus of the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps and the Macy's Great American Marching Band, and has served as a music and visual instructor for high school marching band programs in Illinois, Michigan, and Texas. Students Nathaniel has taught through marching band have gone on to march with The Colts and Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps’. Nathaniel’s previous teachers include Ava Ordman, Mark Babbitt, Phil Sinder, Jim Pugh, Dave Dickey, and Garrett Mendez, and he has been a featured performer in masterclasses for Joseph Alessi, John Kitzman, Alex Iles, Mark Kellogg, and Kenneth Thompkins. Nathaniel is a member of the International Trombone Association and the music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
